Mahsente Gashaw was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during a time of great upheaval and turmoil known as the Ethiopian revolution. As a child, she witnessed the horrors of humanity and experienced firsthand the profound impact of political unrest on the lives of ordinary people.
During her teenage years, when Emperor Haile Selassie's reign came to an end, Mahsente faced a tragic and life-altering event. Her father, a symbol of stability and strength in her life, was unjustly taken away and brutally executed, an act that was broadcasted on public radio. This traumatic experience deeply affected Mahsente and shaped her perception of the world.
In search of solace and an outlet for her emotions, Mahsente turned to art. She discovered that through artistic expression, she could reshape her experiences and transform them into something beautiful. With an innate talent for creativity, Mahsente began to channel her pain, memories, and emotions into her artwork.
Twenty years ago, Mahsente made the life-changing decision to move to Carlsbad, California. It was here that she found a nurturing environment that allowed her to focus on her art. In between the demands of daily life, Mahsente dedicated her spare time to honing her craft and exploring different artistic techniques.
